What was a small boy’s autograph book has metamorphised into a unique volume called “Joined Up Writing This Time Please!” a colourful 74-page softback. That small boy was professional motori racing artist Martin Tomlinson. Over 50 years ago he visited race tracks up and down the UK with his father and grandfather collecting the signatures of some of the greatest drivers of the 1930s, 40s,50s and 60s. Some 60 years later Martin is one of the elite group of professional motoring artists – indeed the book is illustrated by several of his recent art works.
These are blended into the book with scanned pages of his autograph collection which includes signatures of over 70 leading drivers, including 9 World champions and other personalities, never before published photographs, pages from the race programmes and other memorabilia from the tracks he visited.
The book also contains short autobiographies of the drivers, written by veteran commentator and broadcaster Andrew Marriott, plus amusing anecdotes from Martin. All this is lavishly illustrated by Martin’s full page paintings of several of the major names plus emotive pencil sketches of others.
