Abarth Cars will provide the 2016 Motor Sport Hall of Fame with yet another first on May 31 with the UK public debut for the Italian brand’s new sports car, the 124 spider.

Unveiled during the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, the two seater revives a car best remembered in motor sport for its 1970s rallying success. Hall of Fame nominee Markku Alén scored the car’s last World Rally Championship win on the Rally of Portugal in 1975.

Weighing little more than a tonne, the small sports car peaks at 170bhp, in keeping with Abarth’s ‘pocket rocket’ heritage. They are taking it back to rallying in 2017 – “in the rallies that matter”, they say – to take on the Porsche 911 GT3s in the FIA R-GT Cup.

The much-anticipated Abarth 124 spider will be on static display throughout the Hall of Fame event at the Royal Automobile Club, Woodcote Park on Tuesday May 31. Also on display from Abarth will be a 695 biposto with ‘dog-ring’ gearbox and a 695 biposto Record, one of only 133 produced – one for each of the records set by Carlo Abarth in his career. The biposto Record will also be taking part in the demonstration runs.
