San Luis

The Province of San Luis held a round of the FIA GT Championship on three occasions on the spectacular semi-permanent circuit that winds around the Lago Potrero de los Funes water reservoir. Reigning champion Juan Traverso won a round of the Turismo Carretera on these roads in 1978 but it was nine years before the national series returned. Unfortunately facilities and safety measures were rudimentary and that meeting was marred by the death of two spectators. The regional government then invested $19m two decades later to upgrade the circuit and attract international racing to San Luis. Now with permanent pits and two chicanes to slow the cars, the FIA GT Championship visited for its final race of 2008. A round of the GT1 World Championship was the highlight in 2010 and 2011 before that series was abandoned.
