When the Penya Rhin Grand Prix was revived for Grand Prix cars in 1933, it took place on a temporary course in Barcelona's undulating Montjuich Park. The circuit was not used immediately after the war but when Jarama was built outside Madrid in 1967, Montjuich was hastily re-commissioned so that Barcelona could share the Grand Prix with its rival city. The layout remained essentially unaltered until the tragic 1975 Grand Prix when Rolf Stommelen – who was leading a race for the first time – crashed over the barrier. Five onlookers were killed and the accident spelled the end of one of the most picturesque and demanding street circuits to grace the Formula 1 World Championship.
