Set just inland from Rimini, the Autodromo Santamonica was the only privately owned circuit in Italy when it opened in 1972. It was a flat, anticlockwise course that was a regular for Formula 2 until that series ended in 1984. Closer to San Marino than Imola, it held a Formula 3 San Marino Grand Prix before Imola's World Championship event started. Misano was redeveloped in 2007 (with the direction of racing reversed) and has since been venue for the San Marino MotoGP race. It was officially renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli after the Italian rider’s death during the 2011 Malaysian MotoGP.
