Situated near the Virginia/North Carolina border, Martinsville is the shortest speedway currently on the NASCAR Sprint Cup calendar. It is also one of the oldest, pre-dating the championship by two years. The turns are almost as tight as hairpins, albeit banked at 12 degrees. Drivers must negotiate a tricky change of surface between the straights and the concrete corners, and conserving brakes is essential. Modernisation at the turn of the millennium raised the grandstand capacity to 91,000.
