Laguna Seca is set in the hills of California’s Monterey peninsula at the US Army base of Fort Ord. Laguna is great for spectators and a true challenge to drivers, with its striking elevation change and the aptly named Corkscrew – the plunging left-right esses – at the top of the course. In 1988 a new section was opened across the infield lake after Turn 2, now a downhill hairpin. Bobby Rahal was almost unbeatable here early in his Champ Car career. But Gonzalo Rodríguez’s fatal accident at the Corkscrew while practicing for the 1999 race highlighted the constant need to improve safety in the sport.
