The original Swedish Grand Prix, a non-championship sports car race, was held in 1955 on the closed public roads through the countryside north of Kristianstad. The event became a round of the World Championship in 1956 and 1957. It was also venue for the country’s motorcycle GP in 1959 and 1961, and that latter race saw East German rider Ernst Degner defect to the west.
