Set in parkland in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle hosted the city’s Grand Prix since it moved from the downtown street circuit in 1992.

Set in parkland in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle hosted the city’s Grand Prix since it moved from the downtown street circuit in 1992. The original layout was a 14-turn temporary road course that featured a bumpy combination of tarmac and concrete surfaces. An extension opened in 1998 was intended to improve overtaking opportunities although passing remained difficult before the event was abandoned after 2001. Now promoted by Roger Penke, it was restored to the IndyCar calendar in 2007, using the the original layout at first before switching to the extended version in 2013. The race returned to its downtown location in 2023.
