HWA to join Formula E after Mercedes quits DTM
Mercedes’ DTM partner, HWA, will join Formula E for the 2018/19 season as an independent entry. The team will use Venturi’s powertrains on the next-generation FE cars.
HWA, founded in 1999 after the majority of AMG was sold to Daimler-Chrysler, manages Mercedes’ DTM effort – now in its last season of competition – but Mercedes will enter FE independently of HWA next season. The full entry 2018/19 FE entry list will be released soon.
“Formula E is a completely new motor sport discipline with extremely tough competition,” said HWA CEO Ulrich Fritz.
“It’s a challenge that we’re very happy to rise to. HWA AG is the most successful team ever in DTM history. Our goal is to continue the company’s success story in Formula E. At the same time, Formula E, with its unique concept, offers a completely new perspective on the future of motor sport.”
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said that HWA’s “proven track record” would breed similar success in Formula E. Venturi Automobiles president Gildo Pastor added that he was “delighted” to provide Gen2 Formula E cars to the new squad.
From 2000-17, HWA and Mercedes took seven DTM championships and more than 100 race victories. Audi and BMW will be the only manufacturers left in DTM competition from 2019.
