The Greenpower Education Trust has been around since 1999, helping to inspire young engineers, and part of its annual programme is a race at Goodwood for electric cars.
This video follows young engineer Sean Webb and Team USA’s trip to Sussex in 2013 for the International Final. For those of you not familiar with the trust, here are its goals:
- To change current views about engineering, presenting it as a fascinating, relevant and dynamic career choice for any young person
- To demonstrate the importance of engineering, and associated STEM subjects, to solve the problems faced by societies today particularly in the areas of sustainability
- To link education, industry and community through inspirational engineering projects
- To promote social inclusion through engaging with vulnerable and economically disadvantaged young people
Greenpower will be working with Formula E on the new series’ support races. It’s an obvious tie-in but a nonetheless important one; motor sport’s turning green, but there’s still plenty of debate about whether all that technology can really make a difference on the road car market. The limitations of current electric cars raise a lot of questions, but with promising engineering talent being exposed to the racing environment – and encouraged to participate – strides could well be made in the near future. After all, competition improves the breed.
This year’s International Final at Goodwood takes place on October 12.
