Relief for Formula E after first Gen 3 race, but can it convince sceptics?

Seven is indeed a lucky number. Formula E has had seven rounds in this 2018-19 season, and there have been seven different winners from seven different teams. And this latest win, in Rome last weekend, was a momentous one, as Jaguar won a FE race for the first time, in its third year of trying.
It also was the first FE win for its victorious driver Mitch Evans, who won after passing poleman André Lotterer at two-thirds’ distance. Starting second, Evans shadowed Lotterer’s DS Techeetah from the off then elbowed his way by having harassed Lotterer into a compromised line.
The pair remained locked together to the end, Evans hanging on in first despite some drama from missing the ‘attack mode’ zone and letting Lotterer get onto his tail with the extra power.
Stoffel Vandoorne completed the podium for HWA, in his first strong showing since arriving from Formula 1 at the end of last year. He was nearly denied it though as he stopped with a suspected broken driveshaft shortly after crossing the line.
It’s appropriately tight in the championship table too. Mahindra’s Jérôme d’Ambrosio is now back on top by a point, from previous leader António Félix da Costa of BMW, after d’Ambrosio in Rome finished eighth to da Costa’s ninth.
Evans with his win leaps up to fourth in the table, just four points off the top. Only Evans indeed has scored in every round this season. Lotterer moves up to third with his Rome result, three points off the top.
