Why unloved Lotus 76 may be Colin Chapman's most significant car
A wide variety of Lotus cars are often proffered as the ultimate F1 game-changer – but was the Lotus 76 an unusual candidate which trumps them all?
Having stepped into Formula 1 with Hesketh before Frank Williams and Patrick Head recruited him to join Williams, Frank Dernie pioneered the use of software to develop an F1 car.
He impressed engineers at the British minnows before a move to Williams followed, and he helped the team achieve its first championship success soon after.
Williams’ first title-winning effort – the FW07 – was designed by Dernie and Head, and the former went on to develop the active suspension system for the team.
His career spanned over 30 years and included stints with seven different Formula 1 teams as well as a spell in Champ Cars.
After time away from the sport, he returned to F1 with Williams in a consultancy role in 2002 before moving to Toyota in 2007.
During his long career, he worked with the likes of Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost.
From the beginnings at Hesketh to other brief stints with Ligier and Arrows, he is certainly a veteran of engineering, F1 and motor sport.
Dernie will be joining Motor Sport in a future podcast so now is the chance to get your questions in for him and we will put as many as we can to him.
