Red Bull has announced a two-year contract extension for its driver Sergio Perez, keeping him at the team until at least the end of 2024.

The Mexican, whose consummate drive brought him the Monaco GP win on Sunday, tops off what he describes as a “incredible week” by continuing his stay at Milton Keynes.

Perez was left without a drive at the end 2020 after Racing Point elected to replace him with Sebastian Vettel for its transformation into Aston Martin, but was rescued by Red Bull when it decided to move Alex Albon out of its second seat and replace him with the Mexican.

Since then Perez has played the supporting driver role Red Bull felt it had lacked since Daniel Ricciardo’s departure in 2018, since taking two wins and also crucially holding up Lewis Hamilton during last season’s title-decider at Abu Dhabi, aiding Max Verstappen on his way to the drivers’ title.

The team has recognised Perez’s contribution with the reward of a new contract. Rumours flew round the paddock that the deal had already been done when Perez was heard to say “Maybe I signed too early,” to Christian Horner on their way to the Monaco podium on Sunday.

Whether signed before or after the win, the team has confirmed that the deal is now done.

“For me, this has been an incredible week, winning the Monaco Grand Prix is a dream for any driver and then to follow that with announcing I will continue with the Team until 2024 just makes me extremely happy,” said Perez.

“I am so proud to be a member of this Team and I feel completely at home here now. We are working very well together and my relationship with Max, on and off the track, is definitely helping drive us forward even more. We have built tremendous momentum as a Team and this season is showing that, I am excited to see where that can take us all in the future.”

“Since joining Red Bull, Checo has done a fantastic job” said team boss Horner. “Time and again he has proved himself to not only be a magnificent team player but as his level of comfort has grown he has become a real force to be reckoned with at the sharp end of the grid.
