The inaugural Miami Grand Prix will take place on May 8, 2022 race promoters have confirmed.

A circuit is under construction around the grounds of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins Hard Rock Stadium after years of negotiations between F1 owners Liberty Media and the local authorities over a potential street race.

The Miami International Autodrome will utilise purpose-built sections of race track with existing roads within the Hard Rock Stadium campus.

“We’ve worked hard to create a track with great racing and a venue with unparalleled fan experiences,” said Miami Grand Prix managing partner Tom Garfinkel. “There has been tremendous enthusiasm and anticipation for this event, and we’re happy to be able to announce the date so that people can start planning for it.”

Liberty Media has pushed hard for a second race in the United States since taking over the sport from Bernie Ecclestone in 2017. Lengthy negotiations for a race was a major roadblock on plans for a race in Miami.

Originally, plans were focused around a street circuit to be constructed in the downtown Miami area though complaints and protests over pollution, traffic and road closures meant that the idea was eventually scrapped and focus switched to the Hard Rock Stadium grounds.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the Formula 1 community and the sport’s fanbase worldwide are going to be amazed by what they see next May,” Miami Grand Prix CEO, Richard Cregan added.

“The circuit construction is progressing in line with expectations, and now that we have our date confirmed with Formula 1, we can rapidly follow up with revealing more of the detail of the experience that will be enjoyed at the trackside which will make this a truly stand-out addition to the calendar.

“This location is already well known for creating unforgettable experiences for events like the Super Bowl and Miami Open. We look forward to embracing an entirely new global sporting occasion.”

The 2022 race weekend will take place on May 6-8 with ticket options set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
