On this day: Villeneuve's Spanish masterclass

As much of Europe basks in a mid-summer heatwave, it is an apt time to look back exactly 36 years to an equally scorching day in the scrublands of Jarama where, on June 21, Gilles Villeneuve clinched a famous win at the 1981 Spanish Grand Prix. Leading home a five-car train split by just 1.240s, Villeneuve’s controlled and tactical victory was one of F1’s closest and would tragically be his last.
