Sebastian Vettel took his first victory in over a year after Ferrari strategy played into his hands at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Team-mate Charles Leclerc had controlled the opening phase of the race but lost out in the pit stop phase to Vettel, after the latter was pitted first and the German was able to undercut ahead.

Max Verstappen rounded out the podium after Mercedes lost out in strategy to their rivals.

The opening phase was controlled by Leclerc in an effort to eke out the tyre life as much as possible.

It was only on lap 15 in which leader bolted but Lewis Hamilton was able to stick with the Ferrari.

On lap 19, Vettel was the first of the leading six to come into the pits kicking off the pit stop phase.

It was a crucial move too as on the following lap Leclerc would pit but rejoined behind his team-mate much to the Monégasque driver’s surprise.

Mercedes opted to leave both its drivers out longer hoping to overcut the Ferraris but admitted defeat with Valtteri Bottas on lap 23 and Hamilton on lap 27.

It was a rare strategic error for Mercedes as both drivers emerged behind Verstappen in an effective fourth and fifth place with others in front yet to stop.

On lap 26, the safety car would be called on for the first time after George Russell was pitched into the barriers by Haas’ Romain Grosjean.

It would be back out again on lap 44, with Sergio Perez grinding to a halt in the Racing Point.

Contact between Daniil Kvyat and Kimi Räikkönen at turn one on the restart would bring the safety car out for the third and final time on lap 50.

Vettel controlled each restart with relative ease to take victory ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and Verstappen.
