25 years ago Prodrive’s Subaru Impreza WRC97, driven by Piero Latti, won the Monte Carlo Rally on its debut.

Taking six more WRC victories that year – five courtesy of the legendary Colin McRae – the WRC97 spawned a homologation special, the 22B, limited to just 424 examples and seen by many as the ultimate turbocharged 4-wheel-drive car of its era.

Now the all-conquering motor sport marque Prodrive has decided to commemorate that cult road machine with an even more exclusive anniversary model: the P25, which chairman David Richards feels will have “little else to match it on the open road” and which will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

Based around the original chassis used for the Impreza WRC97, the turbocharged monster will feature a wide range of upgrades on the original to increase performance and make it even faster.

It’s priced at £552,000, including VAT which is a significant premium to the £171,000 that an original 22B fetched at auction last year.

By using lighter materials, the car will now weigh under 1200kg, 50 kilos less than the 22B.

Few areas have been spared in the search for weight reduction: Prodrive has manufactured lighter versions of the boot, bonnet, roof, sills, door mirrors, front and rear quarters, WRC style rear wing and bumper, all from carbon composite, with the option for lighter race seats and a lithium-ion battery too.

This will of course make the car markedly faster than its predecessor, but so will something else: a huge boost in power. The original produced 270bhp but Prodrive’s will make use of the latest 2.5-litre engine from Subaru, which puts out 400 horses.

When paired with a semi-automatic gearbox, “WRC-derived” launch control, and turbo anti-lag, the car can reach 0-60mph in less then 3.5sec.

With a fly-by-wire throttle and clutch system, the P25 rockets through the first three gears without any driver intervention, resulting in “optimal acceleration from standstill”.

In the power unit department Prodrive has again got down to tinkering: new cylinder liners, pistons, con rods, and a valve train all come from the racing manufacturer, but the interior will have a decidedly retro feel.

The inside of this retromod Impreza will mimic that of the ’90s road car – it can carry four passengers, but with the option to remove the two rear seats and fit a safety cage of the driver is feeling particularly racy.

“The iconic blue Subarus bring back memories of an extraordinary era of the WRC and it was the Impreza 22B that brought this rally car performance to the road,” said Prodrive boss Richards. “By reimagining this car using the latest technologies and materials the Prodrive P25 pays homage to its roots and there will be little else able to match its performance on the open road. I believe we have achieved our vision of creating our own modern interpretation of the most iconic Subaru Impreza ever.”
