Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 kick off ‘Icona’ range
Ferrari has revealed its most powerful road cars yet: the Monza SP1 and SP2, inspired by Ferrari’s post-war sports racers.
Based on the 812 Superfast, the Monzas are carbon-fibre bodied and powered by an 810bhp V12 engine. Ferrari says the SP1 and SP2 will reach 0-62mph in 2.9sec and 0-124mph in 7.9sec.
The SP1 is a single-seater, while the SP2 has an added screen and roll-bar to become a two-seater speedster.
Limited to a run of 500, the Monzas are part of Ferrari’s new ‘Icona’ range and pay tribute to the 1948 Ferrari 166 MM – the seminal sports car that coined the term ‘barchetta’ and won the 1949 Le Mans 24 Hours and the Mille Miglia twice – and subsequent Monzas that were raced in the world sports car championship by the likes of Mike Hawthorn, Olivier Gendebien and numerous others.
Ferrari isn’t the first to evoke its sports cars from that era as Mercedes celebrated Stirling Moss’s career with the Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss a decade ago.
Despite a price tag of more than £1 million, all have reportedly been sold.
