As co-founder and technical director of Williams during the 1980s and 1990s, Patrick Head oversaw the team’s nine constructors’ championships, working alongside the greatest drivers of the era.

He’s the latest guest in our podcast series, Engineering the Greats. In a revealing conversation, which stretches to 90 minutes, Head discusses working with some of those drivers, including Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost.

There’s a detailed account of the team’s relationship with Honda; the early difficulties, the success of 1986 and 1987, and the end of the partnership, as Honda teamed up with McLaren and Ayrton Senna.

Head also gives his thoughts on what’s needed at Williams to bring them back into contention with the rest of the grid — and ensure the team’s survival.
