Andrew Jordan has pulled out of the 2020 British Touring Cars Championship season after a split with Team BMW.

As the delayed start of the BTCC season approaches, last season’s runner-up announced that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he would be unable to remain as part of Team BMW for the the forthcoming season.

Neither he or Team BMW outfit has stated the split is due to financial issues outright, though Jordan admitted last season that following the withdrawal of long-time sponsor Pirtek, his future in the series was in doubt.

Jordan has scored 26 wins since his debut in 2008, and took the title in 2013 with six wins during the season. He moved to Team BMW in 2017.

He narrowly missed out on a second BTCC crown last year by just two points to team-mate Colin Turkington in what was a nail-biting finale at Brands Hatch.

“After much thought and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to not compete in the BTCC 2020 Season with Team BMW,” Jordan said in a statement.

“Thank you to all of those who have made this 12-year journey a possibility; becoming BTCC Champion was more than I could have ever imageined. “I’d like to thank BMW, WSR and all my sponsors for the incredible three years we’ve had together. We’ve achieved so much, and I will be forever grateful to have worked alongside the best in the business. I’ll be cheering them on when the season starts and wish them every bit of success.

“For now, I’m going to take stock and plan what our new future looks like. Wherever that might be, I hope we can meet again soon, and I wish all of you the very best for the remainder of 2020.”

The 31-year old’s departure from the team leaves Team BMW with two drivers for the 2020 season, Tom Oliphant and reigning champion Turkington.
