When Minis ruled the Mountain

The Australian Supercars hit the Mountain this weekend, as Holden, Ford and Nissan do battle around Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000.

There was a time when the Minis ruled, though. The 1966 Gallaher 500 saw Minis comprise each of the first nine places, led by none other than Rauno Aaltonen partnering Bob Holden.

Way before then, none other than Le Mans winner Peter Whitehead won the first race on the Mountain in an ERA. It was the 1938 Australian Grand Prix, and Whitehead was one of only two Brits in the field.
