History is also a key part of our cover feature in which Andrew Frankel takes the modern Ford GT – a development of the World Endurance Championship GTE car that won its class at Le Mans in 2016 – and pitches it against a MkI example that had a short-lived but fascinating backstory before its restoration. Split by around 50 years, the two cars ooze the spirit of Le Mans when we take them out for a head-to-head battle. But which will Andrew prefer: the hyper-capable modern car or the original racer in all its awkward glory? It is a question, I barely need answer here.
But could we one day be covering historic electric motor sport in our pages? Such thoughts are on the mind of the Historic Sports Car Club as it plans for a new era, as the new boss Andy Dee-Crowne speaks to us. Our historic supplement also includes a rundown of all the best events in 2020 and even features some new additions such as Rally the Globe’s 21,000-mile epic, and Goodwood’s new rally sprint, which evokes memories of BBC Grandstand pitching Formula 1 drivers against rally stars in a made-for-TV spectacle. But there’s more to our special than events, we also look at the best track days to get the most out of your historic machine and consult one of the scene’s veteran drivers to give the lowdown on his racing plans and talking points in 2020.
F1 Pre-Season Testing
Speaking of talking points, the Formula 1 circus edges ever closer to a return and the first week of pre-season testing in Barcelona has thrown up plenty of intrigue – none more so than Mercedes’ DAS (dual-axis system) mechanism, which caught the eye when Lewis Hamilton began pushing and pulling the W11’s steering wheel. Our man in the pits Lawrence Butcher even managed to get exclusive images while Mercedes tried to keep it under wraps. Meanwhile Mark Hughes drills down into the data to work out the first signs of a pecking order in 2020, with some surprising results.
Dick Seaman
Mercedes also features heavily in a fascinating look into the life of Dick Seaman, Britain’s world-class driver who signed for the manufacturer during Nazi rule in Germany. With Richard Williams’s A Race with Love and Death: The Story of Richard Seaman published next month, we asked the author to explain how Seaman grappled with life under fascist rule.
