Andrea Dovizioso is expected to be fit for the beginning of the MotoGP season following a motorcross crash on the weekend and subsequent surgery.

Ducati confirmed that Dovizioso underwent an operation on his left collarbone following his accident on Sunday, and expects him to be fit for the start of the 2020 MotoGP season.

The Italian suffered a crash during a motorcross event in Faenza. The injury was treated in Modena following consultation with specialist Professor Giuseppe Porcellini.

Both the team and rider opted for an immediate surgery to ensure he would be in the best condition heading into the beginning of the premier class season, which will commence in July with a double-header at Jerez.

Dovizioso has already been discharged from hospital and will now begin a physiotherapy regime in order to be ready for the first race of the season on July 19.

“The surgery went well, and I want to thank all the medical team that did the operation so quickly,” he said in a statement following his surgery.

“I don’t feel much pain, and that makes me very optimistic. I came home this morning, and during the afternoon, I will plan my rehabilitation.

“I am confident that in these weeks I will be able to recover and that I will be in full shape in time for the first 2020 GP in Jerez.”

Ducati said that it had no issues with Dovizioso competing in the motorcross event, and added that it was an unfortunate event in preparation for his return to MotoGP racing.

“Although we know that motocross is an activity that presents several risks, we had still allowed Andrea to participate in this regional race, because he had explained to us that he needed to rediscover those stimuli and sensations that only a real competition can give,” Ducati Corse Sports Director, Paolo Ciabatti said.

“On the other hand, motocross is also the discipline with which many of the MotoGP riders train regularly. So, in the end, we must be relieved that the injury did not have serious consequences and that Andrea will be able to be regularly at the start of the 2020 championship in Jerez”.
