When we think of EVs or plug-in hybrids we always complain about their weight. But while its batteries are indeed hefty, the electric motor in the McLaren Artura, which we drive on page 86, weighs just 15kg yet delivers 94bhp. In power-to-weight terms that puts it in a completely different league to an internal combustion engine. For comparison, Ford’s little 1-litre three-cylinder motor found in cars such as the Fiesta and which has outputs from 75-150bhp weighs around 100kg.
