Lame horse?

Sir,

We have previously heard the story of Stirling Moss driving a Formula 1 Ferrari in 1962 (June issue), but nobody has yet posed the vital question: had he not had his accident at Goodwood that year, how long would he have persevered with an uncompetitive car?

Stirling admitted that he needed a more or less equal car to beat Jim Clark and by 1962 that was never going to be a Ferrari 156. He would obviously have beaten the works Ferraris, but that would not have been enough to match Clark’s Lotus or Graham Hill’s BRM.

Surely Stirling would have been tempted to suspend the arrangement with Ferrari after a couple of races and turn to the much more competitive Lotus 24?
