For only the second time in its history, the Daytona International Speedway is being repaved in an attempt to iron out the 2.5-mile tri-oval’s infamous bumps.

The project began on July 5 with former Daytona 500 winners Darrell and Michael Waltrip initiating the restoration by pulling up the original surface at Turn One. The existing asphalt, which replaced the original surface in 1978, will be removed down to the lime rock base. An estimated 50,000 tons of asphalt will be used to pave 1,435,000 sq ft. The restoration is scheduled to be completed by January 1 next year.
