Ecclestone to sell part of collection
Formula 1 impresario Bernie Ecclestone has long been known to harbour a massive collection of cars, both racers and road cars, but its content has in general remained a closely guarded secret.
We might soon find out the extent of his passion when Ecclestone sells part of his collection at an auction hosted by RM at Battersea Park, London, on October 31.
Already confirmed for sale is a trio of Mercedes road cars, each expected to fetch at least a million dollars. They include a 1928 SSK, a sought-after 1931 SSKL and a 540 Special Roadster from 1937. The 46 lots also include Rolls-Royces, Ferraris, Cadillacs and Jaguars, as well as a various American cars of the 1930s. The sole racer is a 1987 Jaguar XJR 8/9, while more prosaic lots include a 1989 Austin Mini and a 1971 VW Beetle.
