Verstappen joins Lammers for A1 GP
Former Benetton and Tyrrell grand prix racer Jos Verstappen should be the most experienced driver on the grid when the new A1 Grand Prix series kicks off at Brands Hatch in September.
The 33-year-old, a veteran of 107 Formula One starts, will line up in the Dutch team’s entry in the self-styled ‘World Cup of motorsport’ this winter. He will drive one of the Lola-built racers run by fellow F1 veteran Jan Lammers’ Racing for Holland team.
“I believe that Jos is the best man for the job,” said Lammers. “He’s a no-nonsense driver; he gets in and gets on with it.” Verstappen, whose plans to move into Champ Cars after the end of his F1 career in 2003 came to nothing, will go head to head with a field made up mainly of up-and-coming single-seater drivers. Pedro Lamy and Alex Yoong, who are down to drive the Portuguese and Malaysian entries respectively, are the only other ex-GP drivers scheduled to take part in the series.
