Niki Lauda wins the Italian GP, a race of high attrition. His McLaren team-mate Alain Prost retires from the lead with a blown engine. Derek Bell and Stefan Bellof (above) beat Porsche team-mates Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass at the Spa 1000Kms
1974
Ronnie Peterson gives the Lotus 72 its final GP win (above) after the Ferraris of Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni blow their engines. Lauda is out of luck in the Canadian GP, too. He crashes out of the lead, which leaves Emerson Fittipaldi to inherit victory
1954
Stirling Moss comes close to winning the Italian GP after fighting past Juan Manuel Fangio and Alberto Ascari, only for his Maserati (above) to lose its oil. Fangio inherits victory, his sixth GP win of the season. Mike Hawthorn is second for Ferrari

A trio of Darracqs dominate the Brooklands 200 Mile race. Kenehn Lee Guinness (above) heads George Duller and Henry Segrave, the three cars never more than 200 yards apart. An average speed of 102mph is set as they break the one-hour record
