THE TRICKS OF THE TRACK
A LAP OF GOODWOOD WITH BARRIE WHIZZO’ WILLIAMS
I GO DOWN THE MIDDIE OF THE FROM’ STRAIGHT BECAUSE IT IS LESS BUMPY. You brake in a straight line for Madgwick and start to turn when you think ifs too late. You touch the first apex and then have to be a bit brutal with the next apex without sliding too much.
The earlier the him-in for Fordwater, the faster the exit speed Perhaps one lap in five you can take it flat.
You try to make as straight a line as possible on the approach to St Mary’s. There is a lot of grip there as you hug the first righthanded kerb. You turn in to the next left-hander blind, as soon as you see the kerb. If you don’t, you’ll be out in the field with the threshing machines!
There is a dip and a brow before Lavant, and you really need to make this one long curve out of two corners, with the car drifting gently.
Woodcote is a very difficult corner, as I found out last year when I spun out of the lead of the 17 Celebration. You attack it in a straight line, aiming at the Shell Building. You brake and turn sharply, but you need to be careful on the exit as you can get very crossed up over the change of camber.
I try and get into the chicane as straight as possible through the right-hander and then hit the power early and drive out probably a little bit sideways!
