RAC capitulates on Brighton

THE ‘RED FLAG RUN’ IS NO MORE. NOT

because it was likely to be inferior to the RAC Run, which dates back to 1930, but because the opposition to the IMS proposal to let in cars of up to 1906 caused so much anger that the RAC has backed down. The ‘Red Flag’ alternative, so ably led by Daniel Ward with Bonhams sponsorship, has frightened the RAC into submission, and for November 3 the Veteran Run will revert to proper pre-1905 cars. Instead of Mr Ward’s ‘no entry fees’ plan, standard rates will

apply, extended to August 23.

The sad happenings associated with this year’s Run and its return to normal must be confusing to intending entrants. But Mr Ward is to be congratulated on forcing the RAC to see sense. Let’s hope full entries and the usual enjoyment have been restored. One has to note, however, that the RAC speaks of having a small number of ‘invited entries’ — one hopes of pre-1905 cars! The RAC also seems anxious to have future runs for Edwardian cars,

so does not give up! The VCC and VSCC already cater well for post1904 cars. However, Mr Ward and Brian Moore, and their impressive number of supporters, have clearly jolted IMS/MSA, and the RAC has announced a Steering Committee to work with the IMS and VCC on the Brighton Run’s future.

Incidentally, the Run is actually for vehicles made up to 31/12/04; were no cars actually made on the last day of December? A point for historians to chew over?
