Obituary: Brian Shawe-Taylor

This capable and popular amateur racing driver died in May, aged 84. Sharing an ERA with Ansell, he drove at Brooklands and Donington in 1939 and was fourth in the Nuffield Trophy race. After war service in the Royal Artillery, he resumed his hobby, first with the Ansell ERA which he later bought, then with a C-type ERA. From 1949 to 1951 his skilled driving gave him a second and a third in the Goodwood Trophy, a fourth in the loM British Empire Trophy and a fifth in the Silverstone Daily Express race. His proficiency meant his ERA was the first private finisher in the 1951 GP,and at Le Mans he was fifth with Abecassis. Shawe-Taylor was the epitome of those who compete for the enjoyment of it.
