It is interesting that Cyril Day raises a point about the definition of the term ‘privateer’ in the August edition of MOTOR SPORT, particularly if one considers the fuss made by a certain editor about Hector Rebaque being pictured on the front cover of the May edition driving a Brabham BT49 rather than Nelson Piquet who won races in this car.

Was Rebaque not the last privateer in F1 by campaigning an unsponsored Lotus 78 in the 1978 season? He fits GC’s definition at the foot of Mr Day’s letter rather well.
