Sheene, Hill, Brundle and more for Goodwood
Barry Sheene is to race a motorcyle for the first time since he retired from the sport in 1984 at Goodwood’s Revival meeting on September 18-20. The double World Champion, who has appeared at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, is coming from Australia to ride a classic 500cc Manx Norton in the Lennox Cup, only the second bike race to be held at the circuit.
A sensational entry for the Goodwood Tourist Trophy is also promised, and includes such celebrities as 1988 Indycar champion Danny Sullivan who will race a Ferrari 250 GTO in the Tourist Trophy race against former Grand Prix driver Martin Brundle, on board the famous low drag coupe E-type ‘CUT 7’ and Stirling Moss in his 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Short Wheelbase TT-winner tested in this month’s issue (see page 34). Plans are also afoot to reunite former world champion Sir Jack Brabham with a Grand Prix Cooper and find ‘Black Jack’ an entry in the TT race as well.
Damon Hill is rumoured to be making an appearance and may demonstrate sonic of his father’s early race cars, while a ‘Dream Grid’ feature on the Sunday has attracted Phil Hill, John Surtees, Tony Brooks, Frank Gardner, Peter Gethin, Dan Gurney, Tony Marsh, Moss, David Piper and Roy Salvadori, all of whom turn out in classic Goodwood machinery.
Watch out also for no fewer than three BRM V16s, which will race together in the hands of Peter Gethin, Rick Hall and Nick Mason. Lord March has bought a Ford Galaxie in which to contest the St Mary’s Trophy race, and will also run a Lola Mkl sportscar against the similar machines of Moss and Derek Bell. MP
