First Ferry

When we wrote in the June issue of the Autoglass Tour planned for 1989, a revival and extension of the former Tour of Britain, we mentioned that the organisers’ publicists were somewhat assumptive in their claim that the event’s crossing of the Irish Sea would be the first time that a British-based event included a ferry-crossing during its running.

To claim a “first” you really have to be sure of your facts, and such a ferry crossing has actually been done before. For the record, the event in question was the Isle of Wight Rally which was very popular in the Sixties. It started at Chichester, finished at Sandown, and included sections both on the mainland and on the Island, linked by a crossing on the Isle of Wight Ferry from Southampton to Cowes. GP
