Harold Hastings

With the death of Harold Charles Hastings at the age of 74 another link with pre-war motoring journalism is unhappily broken. Hastings joined The Light Car & Cyclecar at the beginning of 1925. His father had owned a flat-twin Rover 8 and Harold got an Omega 3-wheeler as his first staff-car, from Temple Press, before going on to better things. He competed in the classic MCC long-distance trials, became Sports Editor of Light Car in 1937 and was a Founder Member, with FLM Harris, of the MG CC. During thence he served with the RASC and RIASC, being demobilised with the rank of Major. He then became Midlands Editor of Motor from 1948 until his retirement in 1971. A Vice-President of the Midland AC, Hastings compiled the history of Shelsley Walsh for the 75th year of that great hill-climb and was writing to the last some very interesting reminiscences of cars he had owned. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs Hastings, who as she usually did, accompanied her husband to the last VSCC Shelsley Walsh meeting. — WB.
