1977 German Grand Prix in pictures
German Grand Prix
The German Grand Prix was held at Hockenheim on July 31st rather than its usual home at the 14-mile Nurburgring. This was the second time that the race has left its traditional home in the last 10 years and it provided a triumph for Niki Lauda in his Ferrari 31T2T, just one year to the day after the Austrian driver was badly injured in an accident at Burburgring. At the bottom of the page pole position winner Jody Scheckter’s Wolf is seen ahead of eventual winner Luda while James Hunt’s McLaren M26 is in third place behind them. Scheckter finished second while Hunt eventually retired with mechanical fuel pump failure. Right, John Watson’s Brabham BT45B started from second place on the grid but this time lasted only a handful of laps before the car’s engine suffered a major breakage. In our picture smoke and steam can be seen issuing from just ahead of the left rear wheel bearing testimony to the car’s trouble. Above, the massed starting grid with the beginnings of the multiple accident that eliminated Jones’ shadow and Regazzoni’s Ensign.
