Enthusiasts' Cars

Sir,

Although I am a regular reader of your magazine I feel I must take issue with you over two articles printed in the June and August numbers.

The articles in question, “Triumph TR7 sports car or two-seater saloon”, and “Fiat X1-9: A thoroughly modern sports car”, referred to the 105 b.h.p. TR with its 0-60 m.p.h. time of under 10 sec. as “a good ladies’ car” and advised “the true enthusiast might look elsewhere”, while the 75 b.h.p. Fiat (0-60 m.p.h. in 12 sec.) was described as “a true enthusiast’s car.”

Surely the difference between an “enthusiast’s” car and the rest does not stem solely from a detachable roof, or does performance and price no longer enter into the argument as to what constitutes a real sports car?
