More Jargon

Sir, Gaining as usual much enjoyment from D.S.J.’s remarks in the August issue of MOTOR SPORT and in particular his remarks about the motorcycling fraternity’s current jargon and brand names thereof, it does seem curious how successive generations retain their own pet turn of phrase.

My own particular favourite – current in the early fifties – is the expression “full hole” whilst my father, who did his share of two-wheeling in the twenties, still refers to “having the taps wide open”. There are many others – another favourite being “foot in the Amals” used by Denis May in describing the exploits of a certain Clive Lones who did things with Morgan trikes and was, I believe, the first three-wheeler driver to be credited with a 100m.p.h. lap at Brooklands – but this is digressing.

Perhaps as a change from “My Ideal Pair” a little pursuance of readers’ favourite “jargon” (a horrible word) might prove evocative.

On a different track entirely – what better tribute to the late Parry Thomas than Owen Wyn Owen’s efforts together with those of his helpers. There must be some worried accountants somewhere, but don’t please ever mention the cost as it would quite spoil the picture.

Finally, may I endorse the remarks of your correspondent R.A. Chasmar regarding Old Car Freedom. My wife, small son and self participated in the Morris Register trip to Belgium and thoroughly enjoyed the experience – as did many others. And that is what it’s all about – the fun is still there but one has to dig a little deeper or travel a little further to find it.
