That Race to London

Sir, the Essex Super Six was crewed by my father and his late cousin, Harry Whitehead, who was the Hudson/Essex agent, my father being his chargehand mechanic. The contesting car was a Willys “Overland”, driven by Jock Anderson of Fallowfield, Manchester. (This makes the letter from Mr. Shorrocks in the June issue completely erroneous, whereby he states that Whitehead drove the Willys!). Two later runs were made by the Essex, against the clock only, the first of which resulted in a “blown” engine, but the second run returned a time of 3 hr. 27 min., knocking 13 min. off the “race” time, and setting a record which stood until the opening of the motorway through the Midlands from the North.

Incidentally, the letter written by Harry Whitehead which you published went “astray” about two years ago and my father and I would be interested to know how your correspondent came to be in possession of it.

Audenshaw.
