Recent Formula Two Results

Tulin-Langenlebarn (July 14th)

For the second year running Rindt made no mistakes on his home ground and at the Tulin-Langenlebarn airfield circuit, near Vienna, he scored his most decisive win of the year in Formula Two. His Winkelmann Racing Brabham BT23 had an aerofoil for the first time—the first to be seen in Formula Two—and he won both heats from the two Frenchmen Beltoise and Pescarolo in the works Matras. Ahrens in his Brabham was fourth on both occasions. The big surprise of the race was the form of the Italian F.3 Champion Brambilla, who finished sixth in the overall results in his first drive in an ex-works Brabham BT23. Both the Ferraris suffered gearbox troubles.

Zandvoort (July 28th)

At Zandvoort several more wings had sprouted on the Formula Two cars for this interesting race which was only open to non-graded drivers. As there was a large entry the race was run in two heats and a final. After the heats, which were won by Bell’s Ferrari and Courage’s Brabham, the result looked very open and both the works Matras looked likely to worry the heat winners. Bell led most of the early laps of this closely fought race until gear linkage problems intervened and he had to make a pit stop. Courage then took command of the race but spun, leaving the two Matras to fend off the Ron Harris Tecno driven by Attwood, which they did successfully. The victory clinched the European F.2 Championship for Beltoise. During the final the young bespectacled English driver Chris Lambert lost his life after a collision with the Tecno driver Regazzoni. Lambert’s Brabham crashed over a parapet on to a road under the circuit, and he was killed instantly. During a heat, the Italian Brambilla, now in a works Ferrari, set up a new outright record for the circuit.—A. R. M.

Formula Two Notes

Jonathan Williams, the former Ferrari cub driver, has driven more Formula Two cars than anyone else. Last year he drove the first Ferrari F.2 and this year he has driven two different Brabham BT23Cs, winning at the Monza Lotteria F.2 race in one and at Zandvoort he drove a works Merlyn. At Enna he will drive a Ron Harris Tecno but after that will go back to the Merlyn team for the rest of the year.

Although the newly announced Lotus LV220 4-valve engine, which utilises a Vauxhall block, could be built in 1,600-c.c. form and thus used in Formula Two, Colin Chapman says they have no plans to do so.

Lotus have recently been testing a new Formula Two car with de Dion suspension front and back, as well as several other novel features. Both Hill and Oliver have tried the car and it was expected to make its debut at the Austrian race. It seems the car is needing considerably more development than at first expected.
