Races in Sicily

THE Automobile Club of Enna, the small town in the centre of Sicily, in the heart of the mountains, held their annual Speed Week in August. On the first week-end they held a Formula Two race, run in two heats and a final, the fastest ten cars in each heat taking part in the final. The following weekend saw a 500-kilometre race for large GT cars and the special Italian category for the LM Ferrari. Only opposition to the Ferraris came from the Shelby Cobra coupés of the Alan Mann racing team, but the LM Ferrari of Mario Casoni was the eventual winner. As the LM is only recognised as a GT car by the Italian Federation the Cobras won the GT category under F.I.A. rules.

Finally there was a Formula One race, to which Team Lotus sent Clark and Spence, with Lotus R6 and Lotus R9, respectively, both with 16-valve Climax engines. Brabham and Hulme had works Brabham-Climax cars and the rest of the entry was from private owners.

As the circuit is flat and almost flat-out all the way, engine power and slip-streaming tactics are all important and, as last year, Siffert just managed to beat Clark.
