For the trade or the enthusiast?
Sir,
The Editor of The Motor—in a moment of true repentance, or of inspiration, or of aberration—published last week a letter from me criticising his journal for being “just another trade publication” with solely the interests of the trade, and not of the motoring public, at heart.
By every post since then I have received an astonishing “fan mail” from people all over the country commending my letter; and I think you should know that about 90% of these letters recommend me to read Motor Sport for fearless criticism of bad or inferior motor cars, of whatever origin.
As your annual subscription lists will show, I have been reading Motor Sport for many years, and I now have had great pleasure in forwarding the best of my “fan mail” making recommendations of it to the editor of The Motor. (But I do not think he will publish it, because he cut out a similar recommendation from my original letter before he printed it!) As I told him, your journal “goes deservedly from strength to strength.” Even so, I thought you might be pleased to hear that so many people are ready to write to a stranger recommending your paper and your policy.
