THE BOREHAM AIRFIELD MEETING

The wet Conditions at Boreliam Airfield on August 11th not only made the course dangerously slippery, but appeared to make rather a lot of ” short circuits ” in the organisation, whieli showed depressing signs Of lack of experience on OtellOons. The quality of the entry was first-class, even though some of time sports-car events were poorly supported in numbers, making the rating rather uninspiring at times. The Formula III event was marred by a fatal crash to D. N. Brake when his Cooper left the course, while the slippery surface caused a great many people anxious -moments and the rather pointless straw bales that seem to ” grow ” on aerodrome circuits inverted two Coopers in the Formula 11

Mee. Outstanding among the driving was that of Duncan-Hamilton on his first appearance at the wheel of an XI,/ 120, and Shawe-Taylor’s smoothness in the

pouring rain, while Alan Brown with his Beart-tuned Cooper-Norton had the 500S under his thumb and Oscar Moore handled his H.W.M. unusually well. Merrick’s Cooper Special was uneatehable in the Formula H event more by reason of sheer power-to-weight than anything else, although McAlpine tried hard in the single-seater Connaught. The big race of the day, for FOrmule Libre cars, for the Daily Mail 50 gns. Trophy and £100 first prize, was spoilt by the non-appearance of Reg. Parnell (E.R.A. 2-litre R4D) and Dennis Poore (Alfa-Romeo), the former having blower trouble in practice and the latter being messed about by inefficient marshalling in the paddock and being left behind when the starting signal was given. One hopes Dennis received the appro. .priate apologies from those concerned, as it was the only race in which he was due to ran. Results : Finol 1.A. lt., A. Drown I ‘.0i•per-Norton),
