Raymond Mays Fastest at Bouley Bay

Abecassis runner-up. Benett wins two classes, with Allard and Austin cars.

The speed hill-climb organised by the go-head Jersey and D.M.C. over the long twisty course at Bouley Bay, and counting for the R.A.C. Hill-Climb Championship, took place too late in July to be fully reported in the last issue of Motor Sport. Raymond Mays made f.t.d. in his E.R.A., in 59.8 sec., thereby gaining a big Championship lead. Abecassis was second fastest in his “3.3” G.P. Bugatti, in 61.3 sec. R. D. Poore’s 3.8-litre Alfa-Romeo was third fastest, in 61.5 sec. and Allard’s Steyr-Allard and Hutchison’s rather-sick Alfa-Romeo tied for 4th fastest, in 62.5 sec. Fastest sports car was Benett’s borrowed o.h.-exhaust-valve Allard, which clocked 64.2 sec. on a splendidly judged ascent, while Mrs. Wisdom was the quickest lady, her Jaguar clocking 72.0 sec. Lowrey’s H.R.G. (77.6 sec.) was the only runner in the 1,100 c.c. sports-car class, entries on the whole being rather disappointing. Newton’s famous H.R.G. won. the 1 1/2-litre sports-car class in 67.4 from Douglas-Osborn’s Frazer-Nash and Willis’ B.M.W. Tyrer’s fast 328 B.M.W. was fastest 2-litre sports car, in 65.8 sec., beating Oscar Moore’s 328 B.M.W. by .7 sec. and Wisdom’s Healey by 6.7 sec. Benett’s Allard rather comfortably beat Leslie Allard’s Allard and Len Parker’s Allard in the big sports-car category. The odd Bond 500 did 69.7 sec. Benett then scored again, winning the 750 c.c. racing class in his Austin in 65.4 sec. from Alluto’s Austin. Gillmore’s Ford-base B.O.E. was winner of the 1 1/2-litre class in 75.6 sec., while Mays, of course, took the 2 1/2-litre class from Bear’s Type 51 Bugatti. Abecassis won the unlimited class, Poore being 2nd and Allard and Hutchison 3rd. Mays, Abecassis and Mrs. Wisdom used twin rear wheels, Poore and Allard single rear wheels. Some rather nice “specials” competed, notably True’s compact ex-Benett V8 Special, and Harrison’s car with bull-nose Morris radiator and 1,250 c.c. Triumph engine. Mrs. Wisdom and Hutchison had their respective cars flown over from the mainland in Miles “Aerovans.”
