The 1936 season has been remarkable for the continued revival of interest in sprint motoring. Cummings’ patent Vauxhall-Villiers is probably the outstanding sprint car of the moment, with Raymond Mays’ E.R.As., the Altas and, in the sports category, Pane’s FrazerNash striving hard for honours. And the G.N. interest is as strong as ever, so that a G.N. Challenge Cup would be a very acceptable gift from some wealthy enthusiast, who should get plenty of interest in return. Once again the Brighton and Hove M.C. will run speed trials along the Madeira Drive at Brighton on September 26th, and this meeting, one of the finest speed trials of the season, will make a fitting climax for sprint enthusiasts. The half-mile course of impeccable surface, wide enough for two cars to run together and flanked by terraces from which spectators can see the whole course in safety, is unbeatable. The old-time seaside speed atmosphere is present at Brighton as nowhere else, and the mileage from London is only 51+. So a splendid entry is assured. Entries closed on September 12th, at Ll for first entry and 15/per class for subsequent car entries, or at 7/6 for cars per class for events open only to Brighton and Hove members. First entry fees include insurance indemnity of 00,000. • The event is under open permits and competition licences are necessary. Cars will be scrutineered and entries limited to one hundred in the racing classes. The course is half a mile long, with tarmac surface, fifty feet wide, and there is ample pull-up area, though the road narrows after the finish, and there is a :30 m.p.h, speed limit operating along the return road I Sir Algernon Guinness, Bt., will act as R.A.C. steward and the timekeeper is A. G. Reynolds. In the morning, commencing at 10.30 a.m., the handicap class for standard sports-cars and the sports classes and certain solo motorcycle classes will be run off. The afternoon programme starts at 2 p.m. with ladies’ car class, followed by sidecar and three-wheeler classes, racing-cars and racing solo motor-cycles. The racingcar classes are 850 c.c., 1,100 c.c., 1,500

c.c., 3,000 c.c and unlimited. Prizes include the Brighton Trophy for fastest car time, L3 3s. or cup at option for winners of sports classes, L15 for winners of racing-car classes and L5 for second placings, and many special cups and awards. So far as mere spectators are concerned, the writer would mention that the greatest impression of speed he has ever seen, Brooklands apart, was when watching R. 0.
