“FIVE-HUNDRED” PROSPECTS

On October 10th at Brooklands the B.R.D.C. will stage • the eighth 500-Mile Outer-Circuit Track Race, run on a handicap basis and appreciated the world over as the fastest long-distance track contest.

The complete list of entries is given at the end of this article.

A very interesting entry, with plenty of cars scheduled to spend an afternoon at around 120 m.p.h. Humphrey’s M.G. Midget has taken over two years to build. It was described in the March MOTOR SPORT and every nut and bolt has been hand fitted and numbered. D. G. Evans’ M.G. is the old 130 m.p.h. Magic Magnette, with track body and specially large fuel tank. Ruesch’s Alfa-Romeo will probably be able to play with its handicap and may have independent suspension. But Brooklands severely punishes Continental chassis. The Duesenberg, running umblown, handles nicely and is very lightly stressed. It holds the class C lap record at 138.15 m.p.h. and went out last year with a split fuel tank. It weighs about 194cwt., and can be run through at about 3,500 r.p.m. maximum, using some forty-two gallons of fuel. The Pa.ceyHassan Special should be an ideal car for this work, and the big Hassan will have plenty in hand. It seems that the Duesenberg, some of the Rileys, Ruesch’s Alfa, and the Barnato stand a better

chance than the other big cars of increasing speed over handicap. On the other hand if it is wet, or if the track plays havoc with tyres, as last year, the slower cars will stand to win through. It will be interesting to see how the T.T. cars stand up, though it seems a trifle vague whether the Talbots and Delahayes will run, and asking rather a lot of the Bentley— bored out to over 4i-litres—and the Lagonda, to average nearly 119 m.p.h. for 500 miles. It is not for us to pick your winner, but we rather fancy a Riley, the Duesen

berg, or, if conditions are good, Bertie’s

Barnato-Hassan-Special. The race starts at 1 p.m. and those who enjoy Brooklands at its best will attend. The winner takes the Wakefield Trophy and 050. The race counts towards the B.R.D.C. Track Star, for which E.W.W. Pacey has eighteen marks, G. L. Baker twelve marks, as have Pollett and Gardner, and Billy Cotton, Couper, Marker and Windsor-Richards ten marks, etc. A win carries fifteen marks, second place twelve marks and third place nine marks.
