There are over 10 F3 championships running around the world as you read this and countless series have come and gone in the past. The Formula 3 Euro Series and British Formula 3
Championship are the ones that count, though — they produce more professional drivers and are the ones the talent spotters keep an eye on.
In the past many drivers such as Jenson Button have made the leap straight from F3 to Formula 1, but with the emergence of series like GP2, F3 is now seen as a vital branch on the Money Tree rather than the one before you reach the canopy and the dizzying heights of F1. But by this stage things are getting serious — the cars are more powerful and drivers need some serious cash behind them thanks to international calendars — even for the British series — and lots of testing.
