Six-wheeler races at last

Thirty-five years after it was created by the March Grand Prix team, the six-wheeled March 2-4-0 had its debut race at the Silverstone Classic. After two tests in 1976 the project was abandoned, but the car has been rebuilt over two years by Tony Smith, who unearthed the four

wheel-drive system for the back end. His son Jeremy raced the car (below). The March completed nine

laps in the opening race before being halted by an electrical problem, but Smith Jr believes it has potential.

“The balance was fantastic and it’s got loads of grip,” he said. “The times would have put us midfield on the grid and I was just driving around the outside of people.”

In the same race Nathan Kinch (top) had a debut run in the McLaren MP4/1 that John Watson took to victory in the 1982 Detroit Grand Prix. The car was last raced by Aaron Hsu.

The ex-Alan Jones Williams FW07 also raced with new owner Richard Meins (above). Jones won the 1981 US GP in the car that has more recently been raced by American Roy Walzer.
